Cover Comparisons #73: Partials by Dan Wells

Living in Germany gives me the perfect opportunity to compare original covers with the ones German publishers choose. Sometimes they're gorgeous, sometimes they make me cringe, but it's always interesting to see different covers for the same novel.

To my shame I have to admit that I still didn't manage to read Partials despite the very awesome things I've heard about it (feel free to make me see reason in the comments). I actually like all of these covers as their composition of images is very beautifully done. The German cover's colours are definitely more eye-catching, but I think I prefer the more muted colors of the US and UK versions. These two don't have too many differences, but the longer I look at them the more I realize that I prefer the UK version. The typography and the light violett tint of the picture appeal to me a tiny bit more.

I always like the fantasy-like feeling of Maggie's covers because they usually fit her beautiful writing oh-so-well. To my shame I have to admit that I haven't read The Scorpio Races yet, but I've had a UK copy ever since the book has been released and really hope to get to read it soon. Therefore it's also obvious that I definitely prefer the UK cover to US hardback cover - the latter is a little bit boring to me instead of just beautifully simple. The new US version (to be released April 2013) is a little bit better as it has more life to it, but I still prefer the UK cover. The German version is pretty, but - to me - slightly boring, too.

I'm not really sure which cover of these I like most. To be honest, I don't love any of these, even though they are definitely special. The typography of the German cover is very pretty and unique, but I probably wouldn't have chosen this color along with a male cover model. The new US cover is definitely more eye-catching than the older one. Nonetheless I feel as though it's a bit too hectic for my taste and would probably rather pick up the older version, even though this one's colours are a tiny bit too gloomy for me... you see, I can't really make up my mind.

I have to admit that I've never really been a huge fan of Nevermore's US cover, which is probably one of the main reasons why I've never felt the urge to pick up a copy of it despite all the raving reviews. But when I saw the German cover I got curious instantly, because despite its very girly colours it's very special and unique and would immediately catch my eye. Definitely my favorite of these two!

I have to admit that I don't truly love any of these covers, but nonetheless they're pretty and might catch my attention in a book store. My least favorite is probably the German one, because - for me - the bottom part completely ruines the gorgeous image of the girl (which you can also see in the cover of Wander Dust by Michelle Warren). My second to last favorite is the AUS/NZ cover, which - while pretty - seems a bit boring and doesn't make me "feel" anything special when looking at it. After that it's a tie between the US and the UK cover for me. I always like the sci-fi feeling of the US cover, but I also really like the style of the UK version - and I really don't know which one's better.

I always liked the seductive and slightly dangerous feeling of the old US cover for Monstrous Beauty, but when I saw the new US version I fell in love with it immediately. I just absolutely love the colors and the mystery it emits. But when I saw the German version in a book store this week (it seems to have been released way before the English version which really confused me at first), I knew which cover is my favorite. The aqua / turquoise color scheme, the really pretty model and the lovely typography in combination with the wonderful textures - I love this cover! Definitely my favorite.

The real-life version of the US hardback of Shatter Me is so very pretty and shiny, but with time I'm getting a little bit annoyed by the slightly aggressive feeling to it. Therefore I'm actually quite happy with the new covers they chose even if my copy of Shatter Me won't match with my (future) copy of Unravel Me. While I have to admit that the eye is quite a bit creepy, I like the very unique style and it would make me curious about the book immediately, if I had not read and loved it already. The German version is okay, I'd say, although at first I was pretty confused when I saw it in a book store. You might remember that girl's image from Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon - and to be honest I hate it when two different books have such obvious cover similarities.

The German cover is... different. I'm not quite sure what to think of it, because while it's definitely eye-catching, I'm not sure whether it gives you the right idea about Abandon's content. When it comes to the US and UK versions I have to admit that I always loved both of them, but I think I might prefer the UK cover a tiny bit more - it's more dramatic and its colors are more appealing to me and if I ever get a copy of this book, I'm sure it'll be the UK version.

I think it's very hard to find a book that has a more gorgeous cover than Incarnate, but its German version is actually coming quite close. I absolutely love the cover model's colorful eyes and the flowers on the left side of the cover along with the title that can be translated into The Ocean of Souls. Nonetheless I still prefer the US cover, whose colors and image are just so, so über-gorgeous.

To be honest, the only thing I truly adore about the German cover is the title, which can be translated into Do you even know that you broke my heart? and just makes it sound like a very interesting story immediately. But despite the colors, I don't really like the rest of the cover. The balloon heart just looks pitiful and even though I'm sure that it was intended, I just wouldn't find it appealing to pick it up. In contrast to that, I absolutely adore the US cover... the girl "flying in heaven", the beautiful typography and the overall dreamy feeling made me want to read it immediately - I even bought a copy as soon as it was released but have yet to get around to read it.

I was never really a huge fan of the US version, because it was always the summary that made me want to read the Mythos Academy series (which, sadly, I haven't yet). But to be honest, the German cover seriously creeps me out with just the cover model's eyes and a bit of her nose visible. What I also don't like that they changed the title and used the German translation of Kiss of Frost for book one, which is slightly confusing, considering it's the English title for book #2.

First of all, I have to say that I love that all covers have the red/grayish colour scheme that fits the book's mood and topic so very well. Nonetheless the US cover will always be my favorite because I just love the image in combination with the fairly dramatic typography - it looks soooo gorgeous. I like the UK cover, but for me it's nothing really special. But my least favorite is the German cover, which probably is because the model's image was also used in the cover for Amy Plum's Die For Me (take a look at it here) and I liked that version a lot better. In this cover the girl looks a little bit out of place.

Before I found out about the German cover, the US version was definitely my favorite. While I got used to the UK version, there's still something weird about the cover model's surprised expression that would never make me want to pick up this book in a store (love the color scheme though). The US cover though is really pretty and still somewhat unique in the YA cover world. But I'm sooo in love with the German cover. The effect of the girl's crumbling face is creepy and awesome at the same time and would make me want to know more about the book immediately

First I probably should mention how much I love The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight and if you haven't read it yet, go ahead and buy a copy right now! I also really like its covers, although my favorite is definitely the new UK hardcover copy (which is also what I have sitting on my shelf). While it's almost identical to the US cover, I love the bluish tint to it, which makes it look a little bit more alive. The old UK cover is okay, but it doesn't really look like a Young Adult novel, but more like a Chick Lit one. The UK paperback cover looks really cute and is probably going to make a lot of readers pick it up, because it looks like a perfect summer read. I'm not really sure about the German cover though - it is definitely unique with its muted colors and pretty, but I'm not exactly sure whether it'd catch my eye in a store.
