New Distractions is a weekly feature on Fictional Distraction, inspired by various memes that make us share the new books we got during a week, e.g. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, This Week in Books by Pop Culture Junkie and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews.

The books I received this week:

For review:

Huge thanks to Abrams & Chronicle Books UK, P.T. Michelle, Harlequin UK (via NetGalley) and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (via NetGalley).

As I couldn't wait to delve into it, I already read and loved Ethan - you can read my review here. But I'm equally excited for these other über-awesome books and hope to get to read them as soon as possible. I was especially crossing my fingers to get approved for Infatuate, since I loved the first book and am dying to find out more about this world!

Which books did you get this week?

Short Story Review: Ethan by P.T. Michelle

Ethan by P.T. Michelle
Series: Brightest Kind of Darkness #0.5
Publisher: Self-Published
First published: January 11th, 2013
Source: Received from author
Format: eBook (Kindle)
Pages: n/a
Goodreads Summary:
Ethan Harris never thought monsters and darkness would consume his daily thoughts, but every night the same visions repeat in his dreams. He’s careful to project a semblance of normalcy, keeping the suffocating darkness locked inside. As much as he wishes he could focus on girls, sports, and cars like other seventeen-year-olds; nothing distracts him from his own demons or shines through.

Until Nara Collins crosses his path. The blonde fascinates and intrigues him, giving him a measure of peace he’s never felt before.

When Ethan discovers there’s more to Nara than she allows others to see, that she might have a unique secret of her own, suddenly his world comes into focus.

My Rating: 4.5 / 5

What I thought about it:
I've been in love with this series ever since I read Brightest Kind of Darkness, so of course I had to read this prequel novella as well. It's told from Ethan's point of view and starts off even before he and Nara have met, which gives us an idea about what his life used to be like. Instead of just filling the time until the release of the third installment, it adds more dimension to the story, especially after we didn't get to see Ethan a lot in Lucid.

There has never been a doubt that Ethan is a great character, but witnessing certain moments from his point of view just makes me love him even more. His life is anything but easy, but he still seems to care more for others than for himself. Witnessing his interactions with animals is both heart breaking and beautiful.

Of course my favorite part is when he sees Nara for the first time and develops feelings for her. Those two are such a wonderful couple and I'm already crossing my fingers for them to get their happy ending. All in all, Ethan is a wonderful prequel for a series that will always be one of my favorites. If you haven't read Brightest Kind of Darkness yet, I'd recommend you to pick up a copy of these books immediately.

Review + Giveaway: Lucid by P.T. Michelle (Blog Tour Stop)

Lucid by P.T. Michelle
Series: Brightest Kind of Darkness #2
Publisher: Self-Published
First published: July 9th, 2012
Source: Received from author
Format: eBook
Goodreads Summary:
Once Nara combines her prophetic ability with Ethan’s power to outsmart Fate at his own deadly cat-and-mouse game, she’s more determined than ever to help Ethan learn the meaning behind the raven sword tattoo that suddenly appeared on his back after their confrontation with Fate.

During her quest to uncover the tattoo’s secrets, Nara enlists the help of some new friends and discovers her own surprising connection to Ethan.

While Nara digs deeper into the mystery, her desire for answers leads her down a dangerous path full of powerful and ruthless enemies. Swept into an age-old battle, Nara quickly learns that keeping one’s enemies close can be a necessary evil, making an intangible enemy she can control far more preferable to the human enemies she can’t.
This review might include spoilers for Brightest Kind of Darkness.
Previous review(s): Brightest Kind of Darkness

My Rating: 4.0 / 5

First thoughts:
Following The Brightest Kind of Darkness which had turned out to be one of my favorite reads last year, Lucid was full of mysteries that need to be solved and suspense that makes it hard to put it down. While I'm not entirely happy with how the love story continued, I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment and can't wait to read the third book.

More detailed:
I really wish I had had more time to savour Lucid while reading it, but sadly university didn't give me enough time to read it as fast as possible. Nonetheless I was happy whenever I had a couple of minutes to get back into Nara and Ethan's world and find out more about the mysterious and somewhat creepy conditins they have to deal with.

As I already mentioned above, the only thing I wasn't too fond of is the development of the love story. While a love triangle is implied only very lightly, I was looking forward to more Ethan / Nara time than I eventually got. Nonetheless I can see and understand why this development might be better than what I had wished for in the long run.

But other than that the storyline of Lucid is insanely exciting and will make the wait for the third installment almost unbearable. I won't go into detail about the things that are happening to Nara, but I was shocked by the way the story progresses more than once. While I guessed certain things - or rather certain characters' motives - fairly soon, I was surprised by many other things.

All in all, Lucid is a wonderful sequel in a series that is definitely one of my favorites. I really wish I could have read it during a time with less work to do, because I'm sure that I would have enjoyed it even more that way. But if you are looking for a very unique and captivating Young Adult series, make sure to add this one to your to-read list. You won't be disappointed!

Fictional Distractions of the Week #46

Welcome to Fictional Distractions of the Week. It is inspired by Book Journey's It's Monday! What are you reading? and Fiktshun's My Reading Pile and it will show you what I'm planning to read during the next week.

The books I plan to read this week:

My first read for the next week will be Ironskin by Tina Connolly. I had actually hoped to start it last week, but sadly I didn't get around to that, so I'm looking forward to finally start it now. I'm still hoping that it'll be as good as it sounds to me, even though I've heard a couple of mixed things by now.

After that I'm going to be reading Lucid by P.T. Michelle for its blog tour and can't even say how excited I am for this! I absolutely loved the first book in this series, Brightest Kind of Darkness, and can't wait to see what is going to happen now!

And my third read will hopefully be Crewel by Gennifer Albin, although I'm already doubting that I'll have enough time to get to it. I fell in love with the US cover of this book, but the synopsis made me even more curious about the book. It sounds so unique!

New Distractions #08

New Distractions is a weekly feature on Fictional Distraction, inspired by various memes that make us share the new books we got during a week, e.g. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, This Week in Books by Pop Culture Junkie and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews.

The books I received this week:

For review:

Huge thanks to Harlequin Teen, Simon & Schuster, Entangled Publishing, P.T. Michelle, and Alyssa Rose Ivy.

I'm finally back from vacation and am trying to get back into "the real life." It's both awesome and weird to be back home, especially since I could spend so much time at the beach and in the ocean during the last two weeks because we had insanely awesome weather. I also got around to reading some of my own books, but once I'm finished with City of Fallen Angels I will be going back to my review copies and hope to reduce that pile a lot. And I'm hoping to get to these new awesome books soon, too.

Which new books did you get in the past week(s)?

Cover Reveal: Lucid by P.T. Michelle

Today I'm lucky to be part of the cover reveal for Lucid by P.T. Michelle, which is the sequel to her Young Adult novel Brightest Kind of Darkness. If you haven't read my review for that one yet, go here and do that... or just get a Kindle copy of it, because I absolutely loved Nara and Ethan's story and can't wait to find out how it continues.

I love that the cover of Lucid sticks with the forest theme we've already seen for Brightest Kind of Darkness. The colours are so beautiful and all in all, seeing this cover makes me want to read the sequel immediately. The release date for Lucid is not set yet (probably Spring 2012), but I'm already dying to get my hands on a copy of this.

Review: Brightest Kind of Darkness by P. T. Michelle

Brightest Kind of Darkness by P. T. Michelle
Publisher: Self-Published
First published: June 27th, 2011
Source: Received from author
Pages: 248
Goodreads Summary:
Nara Collins is an average sixteen-year-old, with one exception: every night she dreams the events of the following day. Due to an incident in her past, Nara avoids using her special gift to change fate…until she dreams a future she can’t ignore.

After Nara prevents a bombing at Blue Ridge High, her ability to see the future starts to fade, while people at school are suddenly being injured at an unusually high rate.

Grappling with her diminishing powers and the need to prevent another disaster, Nara meets Ethan Harris, a mysterious loner who seems to understand her better than anyone. Ethan and Nara forge an irresistible connection, but as their relationship heats up, so do her questions about his dark past.

My Rating: 4.5 / 5

First thoughts:
Even before starting this novel, I had heard positive things about it and therefore the most important thing is: I wasn't disappointed. It's a lovely story about trying to being able to make your own decisions when your fate seems to want to push you into a different direction. And it's highlighting the importance of helping other people and accepting them the way they are.

More detailed:
Brightest Kind of Darkness is a great novel that captivated me with its beautiful writing and its intriguing and unique storyline. Dreaming about your future is both, a very interesting and a very scary concept which made reading this book a lot of fun. I can just imagine how easy it would be to rely on this "gift" and seeing Nara struggle with her dreams fading was interesting.

On the one hand, Ethan and Nara are a little bit like a typical YA couple. For everyone else it's surprising that they are coming closer with time and some even tell Nara to stay away from him; Ethan seems to be like the YA cliché of a dangerous, brooding love interest. But on the other hand, both of them are very special because of their abilities and their past and I would never put them into the cliché-category.

Something about their relationship never failed to make me smile and / or swoon. Ethan is completely in love with Nara and would do anything for her, and vice versa. They have their lovely (and hot) moments that I loved to re-read and they experience moments of fear - but always together. Yes, they have flaws, but they manage to make up for them and accept each other the way they are.

Only a few questions, which come up while reading Brightest Kind of Darkness, are answered toward the end. There is still so much left that I want to know about Nara's dreams, about Ethan and about the crazy situation they are in and I'm desperately awaiting the next book in this series. That's probably the only reason why I didn't rate this 5.0, because I was left a little bit frustrated with the ending of it - a little bit abrupt.

But all in all, Brightest Kind of Darkness is a wonderful start for a new series which isn't easy to forget. Its unique storyline and the beautiful and easily flowing writing makes it possible to be sucked into a new world and I can't wait to find out more about this. You should definitely take a closer look at it!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

My teaser:

His sweet comment made my nerves jump and my stomach tense with excitement. Abandoning the hair drying, I tossed the towel on top of the machine behind me, then wrapped my arms around his neck.

Fictional Distractions of the Week #2

Welcome to Fictional Distractions of the Week. It is inspired by Book Journey's It's Monday! What are you reading? and Fiktshun's My Reading Pile and it will show you what I'm planning to read during the next week.

The books I plan to read this week:

At first I will finish Brightest Kind of Darkness by P. T. Michelle, a review book that I'm really enjoying so far.

Then I really need to read one of my NetGalley books: Crave by Melissa Darnell. I've heard mixed things about this one so far, so I'm hoping that I'll like it better than some other bloggers did.
Goodreads Summary:
Savannah Colbert has never known why she's so hated by the kids of the Clann. Nor can she deny her instinct to get close to Clann golden boy Tristan Coleman. Especially when she recovers from a strange illness and the attraction becomes nearly irresistible. It's as if he's a magnet, pulling her gaze, her thoughts, even her dreams. Her family has warned her to have nothing to do with him, or any members of the Clann. But when Tristan is suddenly everywhere she goes, Savannah fears she's destined to fail.

For years, Tristan has been forbidden to even speak to Savannah Colbert. Then Savannah disappears from school for a week and comes back…different, and suddenly he can't stay away. Boys seem intoxicated just from looking at her. His own family becomes stricter than ever. And Tristan has to fight his own urge to protect her, to be near her no matter the consequences…

And I'm really hoping that I won't have to learn too much, so I might be able to start Between the Land and the Sea by Derrolyn Anderson as well. It's a book I got for review and I'm really looking forward to it since I have not read many mermaid stories yet.
Goodreads Summary:
Something extraordinary is lurking in the deep ocean waters off the coast of Aptos, California. Just a few weeks after moving to the beach town, sixteen year-old Marina has nearly drowned twice, enchanted the hottest guy in high school, and discovered a supernatural creature. If she can manage to survive her increasingly dangerous encounters with unpredictable mermaids, she might just be able to unlock the mystery of her past and learn how to appease the mysterious forces that seem to want something from her... and maybe even find true love along the way.

Fictional Distractions of the Week #1

Welcome to a new feature on my blog: Fictional Distractions of the Week. It is inspired by Book Journey's It's Monday! What are you reading? and Fiktshun's My Reading Pile and it will show you what I'm planning to read during the next week.

The books I plan to read this week:

First of all I'm planning to finish Destined by Jessie Harrell, which I'm really loving so far. My review is part of the Destined Blog Tour and will be posted Sunday.
Goodreads Summary:
When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear.

As she feels herself slipping closer into the arms of the prophecy, Psyche must choose between the terrifyingly tender touch she feels almost powerless to resist and the one constant she's come to expect out of life: you cannot escape what is destined.

Destined is a fresh and heartachingly romantic retelling of the Cupid & Psyche myth from debut novelist, Jessie Harrell.

Then I'm planning to read Unlovable by Sherry Gammon. I got this one for review and I'm dying to read it since it sounds amazing!
Goodreads Summary:
Port Fare, New York, has fallen into the clutches of true evil. The Dreser brothers have arrived with a scheme to increase drug sales in the area by whatever means possible. Seth Prescott is part of MET (Mobile Enforcement Teams) a branch of the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration). He's been assigned to work undercover at Port Fare High, and things aren't going very well, until senior Maggie Brown enters the equation. He's harbored a secret crush on her from day one, and now that she is in the center of the case, he's trying to stay clear and objective while walking the line between business and unrequited love.

Maggie is truly the poster child for Heroin Chic, complete with jutting bones and dark-ringed eyes, but is she an addict, or is there another reason for her appearance? She struggles with her feelings for Seth, fearing he is just another person who will eventually let her down, as everyone in her life has done thus far.
Maggie has spent her life caring for her alcoholic mother. A task that has left her heavily burdened and alone. Before long, her mother's health takes a turn for the worst, sending Maggie's life into a tale-spin.

While Seth works relentlessly to inject fear into the dealers and flush them out into the open, Maggie fights to stay alive as the hunt turns deadly.

And in case university lets me spend more time with my books, I'll also read Brightest Kind of Darkness by P. T. Michelle. It's a book I got for review, too, and I've heard amazing things about it.
Goodreads Summary:
Nara Collins is an average sixteen-year-old, with one exception: every night she dreams the events of the following day. Due to an incident in her past, Nara avoids using her special gift to change fate…until she dreams a future she can’t ignore.
